Pollinator gardens provide a habitat that attracts and supports pollination by hummingbirds and insects like bees and butterflies. A wide variety of plants serve as pollinators by providing a source of nectar and pollen during the growing season. The pollinator population has a vital role in both food production and ecosystem sustainability since pollination is the reproductive process that enables plants to grow seeds. No matter its size, a pollinator garden has big benefits for the community it's in!
In 2024, the Moline Centre Program and Renew Moline partnered with students from Augustana College to explore sustainable landscape designs that support local biodiversity while reducing maintenance costs. A pollinator bed planted by Augustana students in 2025 launched a pilot program to establish mini habitats throughout downtown Moline to support our community's ecosystem and enhance its natural beauty. The pollinator bed is located at the SE corner of 5th Avenue and 15th Street, next to Old National Bank. You are invited to take photos of the pollinator bed and share them using #MolinePollinators, and keep an eye out for more friendly pollinator pockets coming soon to downtown Moline!
Moline's journey to become a Bee City USA affiliate started with Moline resident Kelly Nache, who serves on the Moline Pollinator Preservation Commission along with Dawn Temple, Eric Griffith, and Dick Potter. Bee City USA is a national effort, and the City's affiliation provides resources to support native bees and other pollinators by creating new pollinator habitats through collaboration with City staff, Moline residents, and our community.
